I came across this picture of Grandma Moses. How pretty she looks. An old lady, yes. But sweet and lovely in her own way. Thinking, this is the way women were expected to age, in the old days.
.
I don't remember my own Grandmother, because she died when I was a
baby. But I do remember one of her sisters, Great Aunt Josie. And she
was simply an old lady. :-)
.
There was no expectation then, to maintain a "girlish figure," or wear makeup, or do one's hair, in a current fancy fashion.
.
I remember a drawer, in her home, with lots of old photographs, just
loose in it. And how amazed I was, at pictures of her as a girl.
Pretty, with bow, and long ringlets of hair. I was just a little girl
myself, and these pictures captivated me. :-) I had a hard time
'believing,' that this little girl, had been the Great Aunt Josie, I
knew then.
How fashions change! Now, older women are "prodded" to 'keep their
figures.' Have their hair cut in a current style. Apply makeup.
Exercise, exercise, exercise. Etc.
.
-sigh- Somehow, the old ways, sound more relaxing. >,-)))))

I love this post. I too don't remember my grandmothers. Both died when I was still a baby. But I do remember my great Aunt Olga. She was a wonderful lady. Loved to visit her house. I had to be careful about saying that I liked something when there or she would give it to me on the spot. Such a sweet person. Sometimes I think that I look like her - at least the white hair part. And no, there were no expectations back then... although I don't bother too much now myself.
Grandma Moses was a beautiful lady, as your Great Aunt Josie must have been. I have friends who are as you describe but me? I am growing old gracefully. I look in the mirror and my grandmother stares back. My hair is going grey and that's fine by me :)
One of Grandma Moses old homes is about 20 minutes away from here, and I have been to the local museum exhibit of her. So I love this picture. I have not seen one of her this clear and good. She IS pretty, and I like her hair too. I think so many seniors at some point, just kind of say...oh, what's the point anymore?
My son Atticus studied Grandma Moses in his art class. :-)
it was better in the old days. Just my own opinion of course.Aging is not looked on favorably in our society and we also don't respect and care for our elderly as we should. I liked yesterday's post too and it made me go eat two ice cream cones.......ha ha LOL!!! Oh, and yes, the pictures were made during a cool spell back in the early summer....that nice cool spell is LONG GONE NOW. ha ha
That is a good closeup picture of her. I used to have the huge coffee table book of her paintings but I think I eventually gave it to someone. My grandmother could have passed for her sister! The same hairstyle and glasses, always an apron over a navy blue dress with long sleeves even in the hot summer. Or prints with long sleeves.
I have to admit I enjoy looking at the advanced style blogs online. I admire them and their sense of style but I never have the opportunity to wear outfits like that if I could afford them. And now, when we just stay home, forget about it!
