The painting above, is my Header, at present time. It was painted by Luther Emerson Van Gorder. "Japanese Lanterns" was painted in 1895.

And this above, is a favorite painting of mine, by John Singer Sargent. "Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose" painted in 1885-6.
~~~
It seems to me, that Van Gorder's "Japanese Lanterns" was inspired by Sargent's "Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose". Which is fine. "Imitation is the highest form of flattery"... as the old saying goes.
We went over to a neighboring state,to a museum, when it had a display of John Signer Sargent's paintings. It was lovely, to see so many of his paintings!
This link to The Tate, gives much more interesting information, about this lovely painting. If you would care to click and take a look.
They are gorgeous paintings and I'm so glad they bring you joy. Have a blessed Sunday.
Those paintings are definitely similar, whether one inspired the other or not. I find it hard to imagine that things like computers and aeroplanes existed at some other time, but when it comes to human thoughts and emotions I don't think they alter much. Enjoy your day :)
I liked both of the paintings. I agree, there is nothing new under the sun. History keeps repeating itself. You would think we would learn from it, but we don't LOL :)
Enjoy your Sunday!
betty
I DO agree! Wow, these paintings are so very much alike. One must have been inspired by the other. The Van Gorder one is my favorite though. Because he really captured the glow and color of the lanterns so beautifully. I am looking forward to visiting this link!
Oh, I do so agree that there is nothing new under the sun.
Love these paintings.
The way the lanterns glow is unreal. I am a fan now. Paintings are so very much alike.
Those lantern pictures are so pretty! Not so sure about the previous post though....summer will go on here for a few more months, ha ha LOL. Still hot and humid here. My favorite is FRESH CORN! I don't care for melons, never did but I do love the fresh vegetables. How was your weekend, I hope it was nice. We got out and walked all last week, SHORT walks tho because of the heat. At least a little walk is better than nothing I guess. This weekend we went to the beaches to see if the waves were big yet from the storm.
I've always liked John Singer Sargent's artwork. I love the painting in your header, too.
How beautiful! I miss getting to go to museums but I'm so glad we can look at beautiful art on our computers AND your blog! We are not getting any effects from this hurricane. We had a chance for rain yesterday but didn't get a single drop. I think the worry now is NC and SC. Take care and enjoy your day! And thanks for caring. Hugs, Diane
Love both the paintings..Fond of his artwork..
Oh! I am a huge John Singer Sargent fan. In my junior year literature book (which I still have) there was an entire full-color plate of one of his nine-foot-tall society-lady paintings. I was enraptured on the spot. Then, in the late '80s, my mother and I saw that actual painting when we took in a Sargent exhibit at The Art Institute of Chicago. It took my breath away. Two years ago while visiting Chicago, my husband and I saw another Sargent exhibit at the same museum. I can stand in front of those canvases for a long time, studying the image and imagining how he once stood before it with his palette and brush. Then to back up and take in all the glory of the picture, is truly an amazing experience. Such genius. Hope you're having a good start to your week. xoxo
Thanks for coming by! Thanks to you I now know how to make a rose. 🌹 (It probably won't work here.)
I have always enjoyed the paintings you share. My favorite is the first one by Luther Emerson Van Gorder, "Japanese Lanterns though both are really lovely. It takes a true artist to paint that brilliant light and make you feel it's almost real.
