I finally got all my decorations, and put them up!!! Actually, they all fit in 2 ordinary paper grocery shopping bags. I have really culled my decorations, and it's a good thing.

This photo is looking into the Hearth Room, to the right. If you "stepped back," you would see my comfy chair.

This is the all-year-long white faerie lights, on the mirror over the couch. With seasonal purple faerie lights added. Kind of crazy, but....... ~grin~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*

Look more closely, between the fireplace and the rocking chair.... ANNIE... There is my besom...! ~smile~ Handmade for me, and 'standing' on a chunk of very, very old European wood.
*~~~*So, what is a Besom? you might well ask. It looks like an old fashioned broom. But with a slightly crooked handle/staff. And thin branches of birch for the bristle part. Bound with willow and heavy cord.
*~~~*
It is associated with the completely false idea, the witches fly on their brooms. ~sigh, sigh, sigh~ Sooo stupid!
*~~~*
What do we do with regular brooms? We sweep dirt and dust, out of our homes.
*~~~*
What can a Besom be used for? Not to really sweep. But as something tangible, to stand for... ridding our homes of negative feelings, of anger, of sadness, of sickness, of any/all "bad" feelings, etc.
*~~~*
Because humans love to have tangible symbols of so many things. We blow out candles, to make a Birthday 'real.' We hang stockings on the mantle on Christmas Eve. On 4th of July, we have a barbecue with hot dogs and hamburgers. And fly the Flag. Etc.
*~~~*
The Besom on a hearth, can symbolize, often ridding our homes, of bad feelings, and not letting them linger.
*~~~*
I keep mine, with bristles up, because it is not a "real" broom, to sweep dirt. It is a lovely symbol.
*~~~*
Now again, this is my interpretation of a Besom.

a riot to the senses

Ya, we still have power. So far, just beach flooding. But, all posts for next week are pre-scehduled (all ready to post on days to come)
now, first...I LOVE your besom. I AM GREEN WITH ENVY. really, I am. And, your decorations & candy corn lights are so cool. I do so love this time of year & you made my day so special. Thanks for sharing. Much appreciated.
Love your candy corn lights..I have seen smaller ones somewhere..I, too, put out all my ceramic pumpkins yesterday...saving the witches and stuff til late Oct..My grandmother had a "Besom" beside her "walkin" fireplace...I think it was just called a hearth broom...Have a wonderful week..
OH, I just LOVE it!!! Everything! And I really like your couch, too, it is so pretty. The mantle is awesome, with all the different pumpkins! And the little lamp is gorgeous. I want those lights! I think I will look on Amazon! I have all my decorations up, but have no lights. I have no talent with arranging them, but want to try! I learned a lot about the besom, too. I did not know any of this! Your painting of the girl hanging on the wall, does it have any significance?
How beautiful...everything is just perfect for the Fall season. I love your besom too and think it adds so much to your decor. I love anything vintage and old timey! Love the pretty lights too. I am working on a post for tomorrow with a few of my Fall decorations. I know you'll want to visit me tomorrow. But today....let's stay at your house and enjoy the fire and fairy lights! Hugs...lots of HUGS!!!
Your decorations are all really beautiful! I love your Besom too.
I know you don't go back to read blog replies, my response to your comment today: Since the pandemic hit we have socially distanced from everyone, including all our grown children. They have been essential and working with the public all along. I wasn't willing to risk it even when they weren't playing with fire like they are now. When they come over they all sit out in the backyard, my husband and I sit up on our porch. We still get to see them but are playing it safe :)
I think a besom is a great idea, a reminder to those who see it to let go of negative energy.
I love the idea of the besom. Thanks!
Say, I really like the symbolism of the besom. Everything looks really inviting.
Well, your decorations and spirited lights made me smile! I love the glow and aura of this room. I agree that you have a talent for placing your lights! Love the mantel and oh, yes... Annie is beautiful! She has been busy this year with negative energy, for sure! I love that interpretation... Flying seems much too dangerous anyway! I could just sit in that room for hours! No wonder you have a comfy chair stashed in there. Our house is way sparse on comfy chairs! I got a bit too handy with getting rid of the old chairs before I was aware of the cost of new ones. We have since bought some "nicer" second hand... but.... actually ---ugh! Happy Enchanting Evenings!
I think your room looks so cozy and inviting...
