🍁 🌰 Wondering 🌰 🍁

“Let’s go Brandon”

One of the newer chickens, went missing, the other night.  Not the white one, I pictured, a few days ago.   My daughter in law and son were out in the dark, with the light from their cell phones, looking for her.   🍁   Could not find her.   🍁   Luckily, somehow, she was back the next morning.

Last evening I was looking at some Instagrams, of women/families, who are self sufficient.    They grow their own food, and "put it up" for the following winter.   They grow chickens for food, as well as for eggs.   Grow pigs for food.  Hunt.   Etc.

Now I think that is wonderful, that they can do this!  What I wonder about is, when they get older....   It is simply a given, that the older we get, the less we can do.   No matter how willing, our older bodies just can't keep up the same pace, as once they could.  What then?

If they have children, who continue to live near, they will have them, to rely on.   But, if not.....    🍁   And NO I am not going to ask them, this question!!!!  -smile-

I know...  Rather pessimistic wondering....   Let's perk up, with this lovely photo above!  -smile-

There's an older woman who writes a blog in Australia, Down to Earth, who addresses getting older and self-sufficiency. There comes a time when one must face the fact that we will do things more slowly and less of them as we age. Deciding what is important is part of it. I have not thought much about this, but I also rely on grocery stores and public utilities. Interesting question.

The last photo is so golden and lovely! Some of us remain in good health when we are old, but those who don't have no choice but to cut back.

I wonder that too.
Being self sufficient is a LOT of work - too much for me! : )

Love the witch above the candle-lit room!!

The way Bud & I have it figured (if we are living independently) is order groceries & have them delivered for a few.

My grandparents were self sufficient up until their 70's. I was always amazed at how much they did and how they seemed to do it with ease. I never heard either of them complain.

Well, personally, I just keep on keepin' on and doin' what I can when I can if I can. It is a matter of priorities in my case. (I used to drive with a stick!)

My parents are self sufficient, they just do it all at a slower pace. They burn wood, cutting firewood use to only take them a few days. Now it takes months, but they enjoy it .. slow and steady.

Just winging it here (like the chicken, overnight, haaahaha) but I would imagine that the kind of lifestyle you describe makes folks healthier (barring unforeseen accidents) and more likely to live longer without the health problems that tend to beset the more sedentary. I think they probably have a plan, though, for their twilight years when they can no longer manage the heavy lifting. But many folks like this are more determined to "do" for themselves, the older they get! Your graphics this time are STELLAR, my dear! The one you posted the other day of a field of pumpkins in a matching orange sunset is now my iPhone lock screen! So thanks for that ... xoxo

I have to hand it to people that can grow their own food. I mean, I could garden for sure and grow all my own veggies. I could have chickens for eggs, too, but I don't think I have the heart to raise an animal for food. I would get too attached I think!
